Chaired by John Urry (Sociology Prof) author of forthcoming 'Societies Beyond Oil', with short presentations by Aditya Chakrabortty, The Guardian, who has critiqued the social sciences for their limited contribution to analysing the crash of 2007-8 onwards Bob Jessop, Sociology Prof, who shows how we have to examined how neo-liberal finance-dominated accumulation is at the root of the crisis and has survived it Andrew Sayer, Sociology Prof, author of the forthcoming 'Can we Afford the Rich', will argue for a social science approach through examining the role of unearned income and wealth extraction in the crisis Sylvia Walby, UNESCO Chair in Gender Research, will argue that sociology is necessary to show how the crisis is gendered in both its causes and consequences Bronislaw Szerszynski, HOD Sociology Dept, argues that the current crisis is the delayed result of the failure of capitalism after the 1970s to make a socio-technical transition away from fossil-fuel technologies (drawing on the forthcoming 'Green Dreams')
