Date: 10 October 2012 Time: 3.30-5:00 pm

Venue: Bowland North SR 25

The Second Language Leaning and Teaching (SLLAT) research group are pleased to announce the following talk:

A mixed method study of motivation and inter-cultural contact in a study abroad context

Judit Kormos

Very few research projects have been carried out that have investigated how students' contact experiences, language learning attitudes and motivation change during study-abroad programs and what role contact plays in shaping attitudinal and motivational variables in this context.Thestudy reported in this presentation aims to fill this gap; it explores the link between direct and indirect contact and language learning attitudes and motivated behaviour in a study abroad context. The data come from a survey and interviews with international learners of English, who participated in an international foundation program before commencing their university studies in the United Kingdom. The investigation is unique in its longitudinal design as we administered the same questionnaire, which aims to assess learners' direct and indirect contact with English language speakers and media products, the importance the students attribute to contact opportunities as well as motivational variables at three different time points during one academic year. This allowed us to analyse changes in language learning motivation as well as changes in the amount of contact the learners experienced. Furthermore, the interviews, which were conducted with the students retrospectively about their contact experiences, attitudes and motivational factors during the academic year, give us in-depth insights into nature of inter-cultural contact experiences of the participants and the factors promoting and hindering inter-cultural contact in a study abroad context. Interviews with the students' tutors served as tools of data source triangulation and shed light on additional issues and provide validity evidence for our conclusions. In the presentation I provide a comprehensive discussion of our qualitative and quantitative findings and give some practical suggestions how to improve the study abroad experience of international students.
