China Views the World: Challenging Western Ideas of World Order

Lancaster China Management Centre and the Confucius Institute invite you to attend a joint seminar with Astrid Nordin, Lecturer in China Modern World, Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion, Lancaster University

Abstract

China's rise is commonly understood as one of the key challenges that will challenge world order. Politicians, scholars and media in the UK debate whether China is best understood as a threat or an opportunity. Within China, the country's expected rise to superpower status is not only seen as a possible future development, but often as the return of China to its rightful place in the world.

What we do not hear as much about is how different voices within China are imagining a future and Chinese world order. If we believe that China will be one of the most important actors in the global system it is remarkable that we do not pay more attention to how China's key thinkers are imagining that world and how they would like to change it. In today's China there is a vibrant ongoing debate over what China's role in a future world order should be. This talk gives an introduction to this debate, some of its central figures and some of the key ideas that are being discussed by Chinese thinkers.

Speaker biography

Astrid Nordin is lecturer in China in the Modern World at Lancaster University's Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion. Drawing on her years of experience living and researching in China, she has published work on Chinese ideas of world order, the role and ideas of Chinese public intellectuals, foreign policy under Hu Jintao and China's new tools of 'soft power'.
