UCREL Corpus Research Seminar: Spatial Humanities: Texts, Geographic Information Systems and PlacesDate: 22 November 2012 Time: 2.00-3:00 pm Venue: George Fox LT3 UCREL Corpus Research Seminar Spatial Humanities: Texts, Geographic Information Systems and Places Ian Gregory, Patricia Murrieta, Alistair Baron & Paul Rayson (Lancaster University) The Spatial Humanities project (http://www.lancs.ac.uk/spatialhum/) is a five-year project funded by the European Research Council. The project aims to create a step-change in the way that place, space and geography are explored in the humanities. Building on Lancaster's technical expertise in Digital Humanities, Corpus Linguistics and Historical Geographical Information Systems (HGIS) and applied expertise in Lake District literature and social history, the project is developing and applying methodologies to allow unstructured texts - including books, newspapers and official reports - to be analysed in a manner that stresses space, place and mapping. This presentation will include an overview of the project by the project lead Ian Gregory and two presentations from researchers on the project. Alistair Baron and Paul Rayson will present some initial research on the problems associated with extracting place names from running text (Named Entity Recognition) and disambiguating between place names with the same name. Patricia Murrieta will then present research to explore texts within a Geographical Information System (GIS) environment. Event website: http://ucrel.lancs.ac.uk/crs Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
