PaSty talk - Exploring Stage Adaptations of Novels: how on earth to do it, and who is the author? - Jane Sunderland (Lancaster University)

The question of stage adaptations of novels shares a great many issues with that of film adaptations of novels. So why is so little written on stage adaptations compared with film adaptations, given their commonalities - notably the importance of the visual 'showing' mode? The answer, I suggest, is largely methodological: in a stage adaptation, given the ephemerality of theatre, what exactly is the 'object of study', or data? If the object of study is assumed to be a given performance - which, given the live nature of theatre, seems the only possibility - how is evidence to be gathered? The best option to me seems to be fieldnotes, problematic as this is, and I will offer some methodological suggestions here. My second focus in this presentation is the question of authorship of a stage adaptation of a novel, given the role of the various practitioners involved in staging a novel, and given that stage adaptations rarely incorporate the name of the novelist into their title. For this I take as data descriptions in the brochure of the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
