Workshop 'International human rights law and boundaries'

Date: 28 February 2013 Time: 2.00 pm

Venue: FASS MR 1

Presentations will consider how human rights addresses the question of boundaries: the way in which human rights are applicable to bounded communities; how human rights constructs bounded identities of the self and other; how bounded normative regimes can engage with each other; and how the state law system should engage with other normative systems including those of indigenous peoples. The workshop will be in two parts:

(1) Dr. Jen Hendry (Leeds) Paper on 'Legal translations and normative communities" Paper here: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2200117.

(2) Presentations by members of the Centre on how these issues can be conceptualized problematized:

Karolina Follis (PPR), 'Who's responsible? Accounting for migrant boat disasters in the Mediterranean'.

Clemens Rieder (Law) 'Solidarity and the role of boundaries- some sketches'.

James Summers (Law) 'The Construction of Peoples by the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights'.

Saskia Vermeylen (LEC) 'The Paradox of Cultural Boundaries in the Law'.
