* Professor Hartman suggests that we read Borges' 'The Witness' and Kafka's 'The Penal Colony' in advance of his paper. Professor Hanley suggests that we read Wordsworth's 'Ode to Duty' and the 'There was a Boy' extract from Book 5 of The Prelude (1805: ii. 389-449) in advance of his paper.

Geoffrey Hartman is Sterling Professor Emeritus and Senior Research Scholar of English and Comparative Literature in the Faculty of English at Yale University, where he founded the Judaic Studies programme and helped set up the first major video archive of Holocaust testimony. He is also a leading authority on critical theory and Romantic poetry. His books include Wordsworth's Poetry (1964), Criticism in the Wilderness (1980) and The Longest Shadow: In the Aftermath of the Holocaust (1996). His autobiography, A Scholar's Tale, appeared in 2009.
