Institute for Advanced Studies The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has an international reputation for research excellence.

In the 2008 RAE at least 85% of research activity in most of the Faculty's departments was of an international standard. Sociology was ranked fifth in the UK for research quality. This result demonstrates the department's enduring research excellence. Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts (LICA) was ranked joint first in the UK. This confirms the world-leading status of LICA's research.

Interdisciplinarity

We have a particular reputation at Lancaster for interdisciplinarity and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is committed to promoting and encouraging collaborations across teaching departments and, indeed, across faculties.

Knowledge Transfer

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is committed to transferring our knowledge and skills to support social, economic and cultural organisations and stakeholders in the North West and beyond. Departments across the Faculty are working with a range of commercial enterprises and cultural industries, public sector and voluntary organisations, educational providers, the National Health Service, regional bodies and local authorities. We aim to position FASS as an excellent provider of third mission activity in its many forms: evaluation services, learning and skills development, student projects and placements, commercially sponsored research, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, and research partnerships.
