CGWS in SHE Magazine

Date: 29 October 2010

The Centre for Gender and Women's Studies is mentioned in a recent article in SHE magazine (pp81-84, November 2010) titled 'Are You a Feminist?'.

Vicky Singleton, Director of the Centre, was interviewed for and is quoted in the article that explores a rise in feminist activism. The article states that there has been an increase in the number of feminist marches and protests and the publication of a large number of books related to feminism in the past eighteen months. It also notes the making and success of several films that are about successful women and feminist activism such as the recent Made in Dagenham.

Vicky is quoted as stating that, despite some significant gains, the news headlines for the past year offer numerous examples about inequality related to gender, sexuality, race and international issues. Vicky states that many women are aware of and experience continued inequality, for example in pay and the number of women MPs. She also states that with increased access to the internet and social networking more women are being stimulated to engage in activism, for example on issues such as sex trafficking and work/life balance.
