Ian Gregory's AHRC Project awarded 'outstanding' grade

Dr Ian Gregory's AHRC project "Troubled Geographies: Two centuries of religious division in Ireland" was recently awarded an "outstanding" grade.

This large grant hosted in the department and awarded under the AHRC/ESRC's Religion and Society Programme had its final report graded outstanding. The project, led by Dr. Ian Gregory in collaboration with Drs. Paul Ell, Chris Lloyd and Ian Shuttleworth (all of Queens University Belfast) was concerned with the long-term relationship between religion and identity, over the island of Ireland from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. One particular aspect explored was the extent to which changes in religious geographies were sudden responses to shocks such as the Civil War and Partition, the start of the Troubles, and the Famine, or whether they have been a result of more gradual long-term changes. A second theme explored the connections between religion and society in more detail for Northern Ireland over the period of the Troubles, and how these changed from the late 1960s to the early 2000s. A book with accompanying electronic atlas will shortly be produced by Indiana University Press.
