New Lecturer Awarded the European Foreign Affairs Review 2010 PrizeDate: 5 January 2011 The Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion is pleased to announce that its new Lecturer in Diplomacy and Foreign Policy, Dr Basil Germond, has just been awarded the European Foreign Affairs Review 2010 prize for best published article by a young (under 35) scholar. The article "From Frontier to Boundary and Back Again: The European Union's Maritime Margins" (EFAR, 15/1, 2010) explores the geopolitical implications of a broadened security agenda for the European Union. It argues that a political entity that has reached a certain level of maturity evolves from a 'frontier era', characterized by an absence of regulation and a kind of anarchy, to a 'boundary era', characterized by order and stability. However, the article shows that the EU has initiated a certain return to the 'frontier era' in its security relation to the external world. European Foreign Affairs Review is a leading journal in international relations and the award is a major achievement for Dr Germond and the Department. Dr Germond is central to the Department's new MAs in Diplomacy, Diplomacy and International Law and Diplomacy and Religion.
