What role for Religious Organisations in an era of Shrinking Welfare?

Religious bodies were once crucial welfare providers in Britain. Many Western governmentsare keen to bring them on board again. But times have changed. Can 'faithful people' still deliver, and what do they currently have to offer? >

  • Podcast 2: Dr Sarah Johnsen [Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh] presented findings from the project "The Difference that 'Faith' Makes", a study of services offered to homeless people. 8.40
  • Podcast 3: Dr Adam Dinham [Goldsmiths, University of London] examined the approaches of Labour and Coalition governments to faith-based welfare provision. 11.14
  • Podcast 4: The Most Revd Peter Smith [Roman Catholic Archbishop of Southwark, Chairman of the Department of Christian Responsibility and Citizenship of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales], responding, underlined the significance of faith-based welfare provision, and the challenge posed by reductions in government support. 11.49
  • Podcast 5: The Rt Hon David Blunkett [Labour MP for Sheffield, Brightside and Hillsborough, Cabinet member 1997-2005], responding, spoke of a "new accommodation" which recognises the valuable and distinctive contribution of faiths to welfare. 10.54
