Professor Geoffrey Leech awarded an honorary doctorate by Charles University, PragueDate: 29 May 2012
Professor Geoffrey Leech, Emeritus Professor of English Linguistics, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Charles University, Prague, founded in 1348 - the oldest university in Central Europe. The ceremony took place on 17th May, in the medieval Karolinum building. The citation stated that "in all the areas Prof. Leech has specialized in, i.e., English grammar, semantics, stylistics, pragmatics and corpus linguistics, he has always been in the frontline of research and his work has enriched linguistics world-wide". In his acceptance speech, Professor Leech paid tribute to the unique and important role of the Prague School in developing modern linguistics in the twentieth century. Professor Leech also gave the opening lecture in a symposium celebrating the centenary of the Department of English Studies at Prague.
