Staff in German invited to visit Cardinal Newman College, PrestonDate: 19 June 2012 Rebecca Braun, Daniela Flint and Birgit Smith were delighted to be invited back to Cardinal Newman College, Preston, for a second year running to speak to 40 AS-level students of German about studying the language at university. On 19 June 2012, these students will have the chance to experience a full university-style seminar on the film Goodbye Lenin!, brush up their grammar, listening and speaking skills in a hands-on language workshop, and ask that question they've always wanted to ask about anything and everything German! 'Coming to university is a huge decision,' said Rebecca Braun, 'and we're keen to help students understand just what university study of a language and its related culture offers. Learning at university is more open-ended than at school or college. It's all about finding out what questions you really want to ask, and then setting about answering them yourself in the best way possible - whether that's why a particular film has been so successful, or just how it is that German sentences can get so long!' Over the course of the morning, Cardinal Newman students will be able to see for themselves how studying a language at university ranges across history, politics, literature, film and popular culture, and equips them with vital analytical skills as well as advanced communicative skills in writing, listening, speaking and translating.
