Law, Religion and Society - A One Day Symposium

Further Information

The symposium seeks to develop an agenda for future scholarship and practice. It aims to facilitate the following:

• A forum for setting an agenda within the broad field of Law, Religion and Culture.
• An agenda for future scholarship
• Exploring the construction of the concept of religion and the religious subject
• The implications of such constructions and concepts for the law
• Furthering emergent interdisciplinary dialogue
• To stimulate publications

Possible Themes

The following is indicative of suggested themes.

· Representations of law and religion in popular culture;

· Explorations of 'Spiritual Crimes';

· Societal and legal recognition of religion and religious practices;

· Circumcision or Genital mutilation?

· 'Hate Crime';

· Freedoms - religious freedom and freedom from religion;

· The private and the public - where does law and religion fit in?

· Religion, law and Culture within the contexts of family, education, immigration etc..;

· Concepts and constructions of religion and the religious subject;

· Multiculturalism: problem or solution?;

· Law, the media and the construction of the religious subject;

· Law, faith-based schools and society;

· Secular laws versus religious laws: who governs whom, when, and to what effect?;

· Sexuality, religion and the law;

· The relationship between policing and religious communities;

· The criminalisation of the religious subject;

· Religion and 'the War on Terrorism';

· Human rights and Religion;
