University Prize for TeachingDate: 13 June 2006 May 2006: The Law School is proud to announce that Dr Bela Chatterjee has been awarded a prestigous University Prize for Teaching for her work on Law 302, Sexualities and the Law. The award was in recognition of the course as a reflection of best practice in teaching and learning. The award was also given in recognition of Dr Chatterjee's continued efforts to ensure the promotion of student equality in the classroom environment and course design. This award shadows recent independent recognition by the UKCLE (UK Centre for Legal Education) of Dr Chatterjee's course as illustrating best practice in VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) use. Dr Chatterjee's course, which is open to final year students as a half unit option, includes a number of student-oriented elements designed to support knowledge development and encourage transferrable skills. Giving her reaction to the news of the reward, Dr Chatterjee commented: "I'm really pleased and honoured to have won this award. I'm glad that the positive and student-focused nature of the course has received this recognition, and it helps to show the Law School as an environment where teaching and learning issues are given a high priority. I'm grateful to my colleagues, both in the Law School and in CELT (Centre for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching) for their continued support and encouragement of my efforts to develop this course, and I'm also grateful to current and former students who have taken Law 302, who have themselves played a great part in making the course a success with their continued engagement and entheusiasm." Law 103, convened and developed by Dr Chatterjee's colleague and teaching and learning mentor, Mr Sefton Bloxham, was also prominently singled out by UKCLE as an example of VLE best practice.
