Celebrating Marcus Merriman (1940-2006)

Date: 31 March 2006

It is with great sadness that the department announces that Dr. Marcus Merriman died on Thursday 23 March 2006. Marcus was an accomplished and renowned historian of early modern Europe. Moreover, he was a remarkable, generous and open-hearted man, who was a devoted teacher and took great pride in being the longest-serving member of the academic staff in the Department of History at Lancaster University. He will be greatly missed by many within and outside of the department.

We invited friends, colleagues, past and present, students and former students to share their memories of Marcus in an on-line Book of Remembrance. The book is now closed but will be available in the futureto read and enjoy the many reminiscences of a wonderful life.

The History Department organised a half-day colloquium to celebrate the life and work of Marcus Merriman. The colloquium was full, and those who attended celebrated of one of Lancaster's most colourful and fondly-remembered teachers of History.
