ESRC +3 CASE studentship Awarded

Interview's for the ESRC +3 CASE studentship: Beyond User-Centred Design: Innovation for Sustainability, took place at IDEO's offices in London on 24th July and congratulations go to Julien McHardy who was successful in his application

This project represents a novel, three-way collaboration between Lancaster's Departments of Sociology and Imagination Lancaster (design) together with IDEO, a leading global design consultancy at the forefront of developing and applying user-centred design.

The project has three main aims:

To map and make explicit the ways in which concepts of consumption, behaviour and practice inform user-centred design.
To develop and apply notions of 'practice-oriented product design' and evaluate their potential in the commercial world of 'sustainable' product, non-product and service design.
To initiate informed debate about the role of user-centred design and the characteristics and qualities of material culture and practice in a more sustainable society.

The research will involve a programme of observation and ethnographic style analysis of design projects and practices, active collaboration with designers in the UK and the USA, and the development of theories and concepts that bridge between design and social science.
