First Catalan texts in the Antarctic?Date: 18 February 2009 Lancaster PhD graduate Dr Robert Hughes features among a select group of authors whose works have been read in the Antarctic. Robert's translations of medieval Catalan authors Ramon Muntaner and Francesc Eiximenis - The Catalan Expedition to the East: from the Chronicle of Ramon Muntaner (Barcelona/Woodbridge, 2006) and Francesc Eiximenis: An Anthologywere chosen as personal reading by thre artist-in-residence at the British Antarctic Survey at Rothera, Christopher Dobrowolski. We believe this is the first time that Catalan authors have been read in Antarctica. Robert, who is an Honorary Research Fellow of the History Department, as well as Magister of the Maioricensis Schola Lullensis, was awarded the PhD for his dissertation on the medieval Catalan theologian Ramon Llull, unde the supervision of Dr Stephen Pumfrey.
