Summer Newsletter 2009- Ruskin Research Seminars and Events

Dear friends and colleagues,

Summer 2009 is upon us once again and I hope this finds you all well and enjoying the holidays.

The 2008-2009 academic year has seen much activity in the Ruskin Library and Research Centre. We began the season last October with a reading of Van Akin Burd's new article 'Ruskin and his "Good Master," William Buckland', and concluded in May 2009 with Stephen Wildman's Inaugural Lecture '"It cannot be better done:" John Ruskin and Albrecht Dürer'.

We have enjoyed a variety of readings, papers and gallery visits including a trip to the Manchester Art Gallery exhibition 'Holman Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite Vision'.Particular highlights have included Robin Holt's significant paper: 'The Gothic Frame', given in conjunction with the Management School and further published as an article in the 'Ruskin Review and Bulletin' (Vol.5, No. 1) entitled: 'The credit crises and some gothic relief'. In March,Dinah Birch's paper 'Ruskin and Tennyson' was standing room only, with the Quiet Room of the Chaplaincy Centre filled well beyond the fire safety capacity, I'm sure! All in all we have been blessed with an exceptional season of visiting and home speakers and would like to express our warmest thanks and appreciation to all of these for their excellent papers and contributions. A big thank you also goes to all of our seminar members for their continued support and enthusiasm.

With our growing activities we are moving towards a new era that will see more interdisciplinary activity and events throughout the University and beyond. We hope you will continue to enjoy these as we look forward to the 2009-2010 season.

The programme for this coming 2009 Michaelmas (Autumn) term will be sent out in September but for now you may want to mark the first events in your diaries:

Followed by Private View of Ruskin Library exhibition, Sensorium - Pictures from Nature's Laboratory: Cyanotypes and Capillary Images by Alex Hamilton, from Glenfinlas and Brantwood (by invitation)

15th October 2009 Readings
