Lancaster University rises in world top 200
Date: 19 October 2009
Lancaster University has risen among the world's best universities in the Times Higher Education/QS World University Rankings 2009 .
Lancaster is one of only 29 UK universities ranked in the top 200 universities worldwide, coming in at number 162 - up eight places from 170.
Social Sciences at Lancaster is ranked among the top 100 at 97 and Arts & Humanities was placed at 128.
The annual THE-QS World University Rankings are based on surveys of academics and graduate employers. They are asked which they consider to be the best universities in their fields, the ratio of students to academics, the proportion of overseas students and staff at each university, and the number of times that research is quoted in other journals.
Now in their 6th edition, the Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings received a record level of responses from both the academic community and employers in 2009, with results suggesting that the dominance of the traditionally elite universities is increasingly being challenged.
Lancaster is currently ranked as the top university in the North West in four major national league tables published this year - The Times, Sunday Times, Guardian and Independent
