The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is one of the leading faculties
of its kind in the UK. Providing access to high quality teaching from
internationally renowned scholars and a wide range of flexible degree
schemes, the Faculty is an excellent place in which to study for an undergraduate
degree.
Flexible Degree Schemes
Lancaster has a particularly flexible undergraduate degree structure. All students study up to three subjects in their first year (Part I) and then major in one (or an acceptable combination) of these subjects in years two and three (Part II). The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers a very wide range of Part I subjects, the vast majority of which are open to all students who meet the minimum entry standards. Subject to timetabling restrictions, most students are free to select any three Part I subjects, although for some degree schemes, such as Law and Music, students are required to take two modules in their "home" department. At Part II, students usually focus their studies in one (single major) or two (combined major) departments but can sometimes take one or more suitable modules from another department. For example, a student studying for a degree in Sociology and with a particular interest in popular culture might find it useful to take a module offered in the LICA
Innovative Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The Faculty is committed to giving students access to a broad range of learning environments that include the traditional lecture-tutorial model but also encompass interactive workshops, student-led seminars and web-based delivery. We believe that, whilst exams are important, they cannot by themselves paint a complete picture of a student's abilities and strengths and so our assessment strategy includes a substantial coursework element. Our over-arching aim is to provide our students with every opportunity to develop a broad range of subject-specific and generic skills that will equip them to achieve their full potential in the increasingly competitive world of work.
Employability
We are committed to producing articulate, reflective and industrious graduates who have excellent subject knowledge, a broad range of transferable skills and an awareness of the needs of employers. Through our Personal Development Planning scheme, we encourage our students to begin thinking about their career goals during their first year at Lancaster and seek to provide them with the necessary support throughout their studies to enable them to approach life after University with confidence.
International Links
The Faculty encourages students to take advantage of opportunities to study abroad either through the European Union's exchange programmes or by attending one of our partner institutions in Europe and North America for all or part of an academic year. We are also delighted to welcome students from all corners of the globe to study with us here at Lancaster, whether on a semester - or year-long exchange programme or by registering for an entire degree with us. In recent years we have also developed a number of innovative "2+2" programmes with institutions in China that enable highly qualified Chinese students to gain direct entry to Part II of a Lancaster degree after completing two years of intensive study in China.
