Jack Hylton and France

«Back

Summary: Lancaster University's Jack Hylton Archive offers a unique opportunity to research dance bandleader Jack Hylton's association with France, especially in the interwar years. Hylton's Jazz Orchestra was the first popular ensemble to tread the hallowed boards of the Paris Opera, and he was awarded the prestigious Legion d'honneur for his musical and entrepreneurial services to French culture. The first stage of this project ran from mid-December 2006 to mid-April 2007. It involved trawling through many volumes of press cuttings, articles and programmes, in English and French, to establish the context for, and reception of, Hylton's main French concerts and recordings. A variety of dance band arrangements and recordings were then collated and analysed. The first research outcomes include an overall report (accessible below) and a detailed historical article on the French connection, currently submitted for journal publication.
