Modelling comprehensibility in second language speaking scales

The emerging consensus among language experts is that what really counts in oral communication is not the presence of a detectable foreign accent, but rather whether the speech is comprehensible, or easily understandable to listeners. Thus, comprehensibility is believed to be a suitable pedagogical goal for pronunciation instruction and, by extension, assessment. Yet little is known about the linguistic dimensions that most influence listeners' perceptions of comprehensibility and how to distill these perceptions into rating instruments that readily distinguish between different levels of comprehensibility. This presentation reports on a programme of research seeking to address this problem.
