The sociology of economic crisesDate: 15 October 2012 What do sociologists know about financialisation and the reasons behind the economic crises currently facing the world? Well, at Lancaster there are a number of researchers who have been working on this topic from a different angles and Tim Dant has posted a blog trying to summarise some of their ideas (see link). Tim was until recently Head of Sociology at Lancaster and was asked to write a blog piece for Social Science Space.Com after he responded to an article by Aditya Chakrabortty in the Guardian suggesting that sociology had little to say on the mess that western capitalist countries have got into. Some of the sociologists interested in finance and economic matters including Bob Jessop, Sylvia Walby, Bron Szerszynski and Andrew Sayer will be debating with Aditya when he comes to Lancaster next Tuesday, October 23rd, for an open discussion in FASS Meeting Rooms 1 and 2 that will start at 4.15pm. There will be economists as well as sociologists there, but students and academics from all disciplines must be concerned about what brought on the economic crisis and what might be the way out - all are welcome to come and join in the discussion.
