FASS Web/RTP Gateway - FAQ

FASS Web is a new Faculty web authoring system which is being lauched during the Michaelmas term 2007. It will allow you to publish your research profile online via the FASS Graduate School and your department websites.

Who can use FASS Web?

FASS Web is available to on campus Full-time MPhil and PhD students in the first instance. It will be made available to all doctorate students in due course.

What is the RTP Gateway?

This links students together who are registered on RTP modules, making it easier for you to keep in touch after the end of the course.

Why can't I login?

You probably haven't been registered. Please contact your department web author, or email fassweb@lancaster.ac.uk with the following information:

Your first and family name as it should appear on your web page
Your degree scheme - PhD or MPhil
Your network username (but NOT your password)

What if I don't want to participate?

Participation is voluntary. Your name will appear on a module list and will be visible only to RTP registered students and tutors, who will need to login in to view.

There are different levels of participation to protect your privacy. You can choose to be:

Fully visible on the public Graduate School and department websites
Visible only to University users logged into FASS Web
Visible only to RTP students logged into the RTP Gateway
Invisible - only your name will appear on a list to RTP students, but a link to your profile will not be available.

The only piece of information that the system will display about you is your thesis working title. Your name will NOT be displayed UNLESS you select "fully visible".

Will my contact details be displayed?

If you would like the wider research community to contact you, you may post your email address and telephone number - that is entirely up to you. We do not hold this information in our web database.

We recommend that you use the phrase "please contact me via the Department address".

Why Won't my page display on the department and Grad School website?

There could be a number of reasons:

This is a new system - we won't display anyone's page until we have at least 20 completed student profiles.
Check that you have set the display option to "public"
Remember that your page won't "go live" until your department has approved it.

Data Protection

Remember that as a student of LU, you are entitled to your privacy. You are not obliged to publish a web profile and you may take it off-line at any time you choose by changing the privacy setting. You do not have to ask someone to do this on your behalf.

The only thing the system may display about you without your permission is your thesis working title. It will not show your name unless you opt in.

How much information you publish is entirely up to you.
