FASS620 Advanced Thesis Writing (Final Year Students): Towards Completion

Module description

This course is workshop-based, and is aimed at students in their third/final year (or equivalent for part-time students). Because of the workshop based / interactive format, places are limited to 25. Places will be allocated in the following order of priority: FASS students; students who need to take the module this year; order of date of receipt of application. Those who are unsuccessful in getting on the course this year will, however, be given priority for 2013-14; alternatively they may register for the online version of the module. Unsuccessful applicants will be placed on a waiting list. As places on the module are limited, please inform the RTP Administrator as soon as possible if you no longer wish to take it, so that your place can be offered to another student.

This intensive one-day course is aimed specifically at PhD students entering their final year of full time study or the part-time equivalent. It is hoped that by this stage most students will have a working-draft of their thesis in place (though we shall also discuss scenarios where this is not the case!). As with the second Advanced Thesis Writing course, the morning session will begin with the discussion of some 'real-life' case studies that are indicative of the problems and challenges that students face at this stage of the project. After the coffee break, we will move to consider the specific challenges of cutting, editing and re-drafting material (with reference to practical examples). At the beginning of the afternoon session, students will be invited to discuss particular problems that they are dealing with which I will attempt to trouble-shoot, in discussion with the group. The second part of the afternoon session will focus on the 'countdown to submission', encouraging students to visualize and timetable all they have to do to meet their deadline. I have supervised 27 students to completion and had to deal with many deadlines of my own, and will draw upon my experience to offer advice on what can be done to make these final stages of production easier.

The 'case-studies' and other hand-outs will be made available on the VLE in advance of the course and participants will be requested to print them off and bring them along. Instructions on how to access the VLE will be circulated a week or two in advance of the course.
