FASS620d Advanced Thesis Writing (Final Year Students): Towards Completion (distance)
Module descriptionThe FASS620d intranet site provides a virtual version of Professor Lynne Pearce's one-day intensive course, 'Towards Completion' (FASS620). This course has been designed specifically for PhD students who nearing the end of their: typically, Year 3-4 (FT) or Year 6-7 (PT); it also pre-supposes that you have already taken the First Year thesis writing course, 'Thesis Writing (First Year Students)' [formerly 'Thesis Writing for Beginners'] (FASS516), which is also available in a distance learning version (FASS516d). If you haven't yet taken this course, we strongly recommend that you take a look at it before embarking upon this one. Not only does this course refer back to exercises and case-studies featured on the Year 1 course, but there is also a good deal of material stored on the site that you may find useful. Similarly, it will be to your advantage to have looked at FASS619d, 'Refocusing the Thesis' (designed for students midway through their PhD), if you have not yet done so. As with FASS516d, this is a course has been set up as an on-line resource that you can sign up for - and dip into - at any time. This means that you won't belong to a single cohort of students or be expected to participate in group exercises, although we very much hope that you put your profile up on the site make use of the 'Cafe Discussion' page to engage in conversations with one another. Professor Pearce will also be on hand from the Lent Term (2013) to answer any queries and offer advice (L.Pearce@lancaster.ac.uk). Meanwhile, if you experience any technical problems with the site, please contact Dr Lee Horsley (L.Horsley@lancaster.ac.uk). The online version of the course aims to reproduce the experience of the campus workshop as closely as possible and, like the original, takes the form of 3 sessions: · Case-study: 'Rachel's Story' · Towards the Final Draft · Countdown to Completion Each of these sessions will include an exercise you can participate in if you wish, the 'answers' to which are posted separately in 'Course Materials'. Please note that this module/online resource will be made available via a Moodle site in January 2013, at the beginning of Lent Term.
