No-Fly Seminar: Climate Change & Society

Date: 18 October 2011 Time: 10:00 am - 01:00pm

Venue: Bowland North B136 (BN SR23 if B136 is too small)

John Urry, Monika Büscher and a few sociology colleagues and students from Bielefeld University in Germany are organising an informal video conference seminar on climate change ethnographies. 5 PhD students at Bielefeld have done ethnographic studies on everyday practices and experiences around climate change in 5 coastal cities (Tokyo, San Franscisco and others). The plan for the seminar is

    • The Bielefeld students present their projects briefly
    • We present our work / interest in climate change /ethnography briefly
    • We read and discuss John's Climate Change and Society book- Please read Intro and Conclusion and Ch 4 &8 if you can.
  • One question the Bielefelders are particularly interested in is 'How to combine a sociological interest in the construction of climate change in everyday practice with demands for taking a political stance, it seems impossible to maintain a detached apolitical, scientific position?'
  • Discuss this and other questions arising.

There is space for students from Lancaster. If you're interested, please contact Monika m.buscher@lancaster.ac.uk BEFORE 17:00 Friday 14th October.
