Research Interests
Dr. Sangiorgi's research focuses on Service Design, which was also her PhD topic. She has investigated services as complex social systems, proposing holistic and participatory approaches to service design, to integrate different stakeholders' perspectives in the design process. In her most recent work, she focuses on the applications and implications of "Personalisation" and "Participation" in the design and supply of services. In particular, she is interested in their relevance to the education and health sectors.
In 1998, Dr. Sangiorgi participated in the mapping and understanding of the Italian Design System. The project was co-financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and coordinated by Politecnico di Milano. It was the first design research project on a national scale for Italy. This research led to the founding of the SDI network (www.sistemadesignitalia.it), a research alliance that includes all Italian universities that have a centre in design research and the SDI Agency-Milan. Dr. Sangiorgi has been a researcher for the SDI Agency at the INDACO Department of Politecnico di Milano until April 2007. During this time, she participated in several national and European research projects, mainly dealing with the role of design in the innovation and development of the Italian industrial system.
In May 2007 she moved to Lancaster (UK) to join the newly established ImaginationLancaster creative research lab.She is currently working on a research project investigating how clinicians innovate and design in practice and whether design methods can be adopted and adapted into daily change processes. She is also participating to an European network (PERL) exploring framework projects and social innovation as a way to enhance sustainable territorial development.
