CeMoRe Welcomes Dennis Zuev

We are delighted to introduce Dr Dennis Zuev, who has recently joined us and will be working with John Urry and David Tyfield on the ESRC 'Low Carbon Innovation in China' project for the next couple of years.

Dennis has a diverse range of research interests that extend across the department, including mobilities, cultural studies, visual methods and China. He has spent an extended period in the country, including working as an interpreter). He has published widely on issues as diverse as couchsurfing and the Antarctic. In short, he is a very interesting colleague.

Short Bio

Dennis Zuev graduated from the Krasnoyarsk State University, Russia and received his PhD in sociology of culture from Altay State University, Russia in 2004. He taught Chinese Studies and Media Studies in the Siberian Federal University, and Visual sociology in Graz University. In 2005-7 he was involved in the project "Difference in Russia", funded by the Academy of Finland and had been a visiting researcher in 2007-8 at the Karelian Institute, Joensuu, Finland.

He has published articles in the journals - Young, European Spatial Research and Policy, Finnish Review of East European Studies, Nations and Nationalism, Journal of Contemporary China, Visual Anthropology, Post-Soviet Affairs, Hospitality and Society, Europe-Asia Studies, Asian Studies Review, Annals of Tourism Research and Sibirica. He has worked as a Research Fellow in the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-ISCTE-IUL) in Lisbon, Portugal, and was involved in a research project - Conditions and Limitations of Lifestyle Plurality in Siberia, funded by the Max Planck Institute for Socioal Anthropology, Germany; and Selfing: Contact, Magic and the Constitution of Personhood funded by Funcacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia (FCT) , Portugal. In both projects his research focuswas on the changing habits of travelling.

Dennis Zuev is a co-founder and Vice-President (Research) of the Thematic Group 05 -Visual Sociology in International Sociological Association. Together with R.Nathansohn he published a book "Sociology of the Visual Sphere". In 2012-14 he was a member of the Portuguese Polar Program (PROPOLAR).

His research interests are: mobility practices, China, circumpolar regions, visual methods.
