Ever since the University established the annual Pilkington Award for excellence in teaching in 1991, nine have been awarded to members of the department, several of whom have also gone on to win national awards for teaching. Such outstanding teaching is inseparable from an equal commitment to research. In fact, many prospective undergraduates will have first come to know about us by reading one of the many Lancaster Pamphlets, which, when they were first published, aimed to bring the latest advances in historical research into the school-room. Importantly, the department's research culture encourages collaboration between academic staff, postgraduate students and Honorary Research Fellows and Associates also inspires a thriving undergraduate History Society. Finally, the department maintains very strong and productive links with the local community and the region thanks to its distinctive commitment to fostering the study of local history and regional history.
