Research Interests

I am interested in all aspects of the creation, re-creation and maintenance of elite identities in the medieval West from c.900-c.1300. More specifically, I have researched ethnic identities in Normandy, Sicily, England and the Crusader states; and their interaction with gender and status-based identities in England and Normandy.

I am at present preparing a book, Norman Identities after 1154, concentrating on the interaction between law and ethnicity in Britain and Normandy between 1154 and 1272. I am also co-editing, with Linsey Hunter (St Andrews) a volume on Law and the Life Cycle 1000-1500. I am part of the department's internal reading group on the Norman world of the twelfth century.

Recent Publications

  • 'Origin myths and the construction of medieval identities: Norman Chronicles 1000-1200', in R. Corradini, R. Meens, C. Possel and P. Shaw (eds), Texts and Identites in the early Middle Ages, Forschungen zur Geschichte des Mittelalters, Bd. 13 (Vienna: Austrian Academy of Sciences, 2005).
  • 'The Process of Norman exile into Italy', in L. Napran and E. M. C. van Houts (eds), Exile in the Middle Ages (Turnhout: Brepols, 2004).
  • 'Normandy and Norman identity in Southern Italian Chronicles', Anglo-Norman Studies, 27 (2005).

Areas of Research Supervision

My contract expires at the end of the teaching year. Before that date I would be delighted to offer what help I could on the following third-year and MA dissertation topics:

  • Ethnic and national identities in the medieval West.
  • Military ideals in the medieval West.
  • Gender (especially masculinity) in the medieval West.
  • Historical writing in France, England and Normandy c.1000-c.1300.
  • Lombard and Norman identities in southern Italy c.800-c.1200. Students wishing to study non-Latin identities in the Mediterranean are advised to contact Dr Alex Metcalfe or Dr Andrew Jotischky.
