Rachel Alcock

History Major, Graduated 2008

Rachel AlcockI chose Lancaster for a change of scene and was not disappointed! Coming from a big city I initially found the view from my campus window (of bunnies playing on the grass!) a bit of a shock to the system. However for a small city Lancaster has a lot to offer and plenty of character. I fell for the many individual shops and cafes and the pubs providing an excellent selection of both real ales and cheeses!

I knew the History Department was good because I was so impressed at the open day both by the friendly staff and by the range of courses on offer. The reality exceeded my expectations. Every one of my tutors was extremely approachable, helpful and charismatic. Not to mention the fact that they often had a ready supply of tea, coffee and biscuits!

I can honestly say that I enjoyed all of my history courses from ‘The Fall of Rome’ in my first year to the ‘Making of the North West’ special subject in the 3rd year. The biggest challenge I found was the jump between what was expected at school and what was expected at university. History essays at university require you to read widely and thus it is essential to form some sort of relationship with the well equipped library! My favourite part was my dissertation which I did on Scottish murderesses in the 19th century. It is definitely worth taking the time to choose a topic which really sparks your interest. I became absorbed in delving amongst the original sources.

The whole experience at Lancaster, both academic and social, together with living away from home, has provided me with a wide range of skills and made me a more confident and independent person. In fact I am so enthused by the university environment that I am now employed by a university in my home city!
