History and Politics Joint Major, Graduated 2007

Adrian GrayComing to university as a mature student might not seem as nerve-wracking as it can be for those coming straight from school or college. However, the same issues apply: those of money, self-esteem, fear of failure etc. Making Lancaster my first choice of university was an easy decision after coming to an Open Day. Instantly, the university inspired a feeling of security with its campus setting, and the History Department provided a support network that was not too cloying in its nature.

I originally elected to study History and Sociology, but the flexibility of Lancaster's Part I system allowed me to change to History and Politics. This was certainly a key factor in my success as I was able to trial a subject before committing. History as a subject for my degree was never in question, though.

I took some interesting and challenging modules, including classic studies such as the First World War and the History of the United States, but also less traditional options such as the History of Prague, which gives a different perspective on history and its uses. My time in the department has seen me spend my first two years as a course representative which gives students a voice in their department. I have also tour-guided for the department. These activities have given me an insight into how the department works, and into academia more generally.

After graduating with a First, I am currently studying a Masters programme at Lancaster with a view to doing a PhD, something I had not even considered until the place won me over. The city is a great place to live, work, socialise, and study, particularly with its great history. The university is welcoming and secure, and the History Department has always made me feel I am in the right place for me. If I could change anything then it would be to come back and do it all over again!
