Vicki Hildred

History Major, Graduated 2004

Vicki HildredI found that studying history at Lancaster University provided me with an immense and varied range of courses to explore throughout my three years. This opportunity to study such a wide scope of history, allowed me to discover my niche in the study of cultural history. I was inspired by two courses in particular: Gender and War - Twentieth Century Experiences and Film Propaganda in Nazi Germany and Wartime Britain. I specialized in the latter subject during my final year and appreciated the chance to focus upon the medium of film as a historical source. My enjoyment of the former course motivated me to write my 10,000-word dissertation on the somewhat innovative topic of cartoonists' representations of gender instability throughout both world wars. I received excellent supervision and support from my tutor, who encouraged me to develop a real authority over the cartoons.

However, the unrivaled highlight of my time studying history at Lancaster University was being fortunate enough to be selected to take part in the department's annual three months exchange program with the University of Copenhagen. Having completed one unit of my BA (Hons) in Denmark, I am now able to add something a little different to my CV. In addition to increasing my confidence as a person, the exchange undoubtedly boosted my confidence and skills as a historian. My time abroad offered me a valuable chance to network with other international students studying at the University of Copenhagen, which subsequently provided valuable opportunities for further travel. Overall, my time with the history department has been everything that I hoped it would be and more.
