Julia Krier

History Major, Graduated 2007

Julia KrierOne of the most attractive features of the Lancaster course was the huge flexibility and choices offered and so I was able to experience lots of different areas in my three years. Deciding to study anything at a higher level at university is a potentially scary prospect and therefore I found the first year modules really useful in providing an introduction to the study of History at degree level. In particular, the module on historiography, which encouraged questioning how and why history is written, introduced me to a different way of thinking about the subject and inspired me for the work to come...

The Special Subject was a highlight of my Lancaster experience. The opportunity to get to grips with primary sources in small group sessions under the guidance of an expert tutor (who had written my A-Level text book!) allowed me to really get to the heart of what studying History is all about. I also really enjoyed the opportunity to put the research skills that I'd been developing to the test in researching and writing my dissertation on Thomas More's Tower letters. It's difficult to imagine, walking out of your first undergraduate lecture, that in a couple of years' time you will be planning and writing your own original piece of historical research.

But it wasn't all hard work! There was also plenty of time to fit in some of the many other activities offered by Lancaster's campus: I chose to join a reading group, take up salsa dancing and volunteer in local schools through the University's Volunteer Unit. The possibilities are quite wide-ranging!

One of the best things about studying History at Lancaster was the outstanding level of support offered by the department as a whole. Everyone - the lecturers, postgraduates and the departmental administrators - was really supportive and approachable and it was easy to be inspired by their enthusiasm for the subject and the University.

Although I now leave Lancaster to study for a Graduate Diploma in Law, I leave not only with friendships and good memories, but with the academic skills which I know will prepare me for whatever the future holds.
