Abi Little

History Major, Graduated 2004

Abi LittleI actually came to Lancaster University to do another degree, but took History as one of my Part 1 courses. At the end of my first year here, I changed my major subject to History mainly because of the department's teaching staff. The topics I undertook in my first year were challenging but the tutors made even the most difficult and seemingly bland topics seem funny and interesting. Despite struggling early on in my first year, with the structure of my essays, receiving relatively low marks, the tutors in the department were incredibly supportive and encouraged me to seek their help whenever needed. Their confidence in my ability led to my marks substantially increasing.

The courses available at Lancaster are definitely wide-ranging, diverse and exciting. Being a modern historian, I found many of the courses such as the History of the United States, India, and especially Gender and War particularly thought provoking and enjoyable. However, even The Crusades, which I found personally very challenging, was well taught and turned out to be fun and interesting.

Throughout my three years at Lancaster, the History department has been central to many aspects of my university life. I have met some of my closest friends through the courses, especially as the seminars have promoted interaction, group work as well as witty debates and banter. The freedom afforded by the History teaching staff to develop ideas and opinions has helped greatly towards my development as a person, assisting in making strong and essential decisions about my future. Having made the career decision to teach Secondary School children, the staff in the department were very supportive and more than happy to write references for my PGCE application. History at Lancaster has been well-organised and coherently run, the courses have been diverse and the tutors have been incredibly helpful and inspiring. Yet above all and most importantly, History here has just been brilliant fun.
