Victoria SloyanHistory Major, Graduated 2008
In your first year you only study each module for a term, but they work really well as an introduction to studying history at degree level. In the second year the range of periods of history, and areas in the world you can choose, is really wide. Consequently I spent the year studying early medieval France alongside twentieth century war and gender. There’s more work than in the first year, but if you’ve got a good seminar group and you all get on well then they can be really fun. I think my third year was even better. It’s really hard to decide whether I enjoyed the dissertation or the special subject more. Writing a dissertation you get the opportunity to do really in depth research and you have almost total freedom to pick something that really interests you. For my special subject I chose Angus Winchester’s Local History course, which introduced me to the study of local history and I got to handle many different sixteenth and seventeenth century local sources. One of the highlights was a day out to the Lake District to look around some seventeenth century houses. From March of my second year I was President of the History Society. The society is run by Lancaster students, not the history department, and it's a great way to meet other people who enjoy history, but who you may not otherwise meet if maybe they like different periods or are in different years. I think Lancaster is a fantastic place to study and make friends. I’ve loved my three years here, I’m just sad I can’t stay for longer. |
