Victoria Smith

History Major, Graduated 2011

Victoria Smith I was initially attracted to Lancaster University by the varied and flexible history course, the wonderful campus and the historic city. As soon as I arrived, I knew I had made the correct choice. The tutors are approachable and show a genuine interest in their students, making the department a place of familiarity and security. It always felt like a wonderful department to be a part of.

I took a variety of history modules which were all structured and delivered in such a way that you felt increasingly confident and knowledgeable as the course progressed. Furthermore, due to the variety of modules on offer I was able to focus on areas of personal interest. For me, this included modules on political and social history, with a modern focus.

My third-year dissertation was on social perceptions of female lunatics in nineteenth-century Britain. This topic enabled me to look at family letters and asylum records at the Lancashire County Archive, in Preston, as well as national newspaper articles and contemporary fiction. The sense of accomplishment when you have the final draft bound is wonderful, and the end result is a useful example of your skills when applying for postgraduate courses.

My time at Lancaster was not all about the history course. I also took part in two fantastic societies. The History Society met regularly and incorporated a vast range of activities into the social calendar, including lectures by visiting and resident lecturers, themed quizzes, ghost walks around Lancaster and themed pub crawls. I also joined the Clay Pigeon Shooting Club, which met every week to shoot. Through the latter society, I was able to learn something completely new and to meet people from various other courses.

It has been a busy yet amazing three years. They may have flown by with great speed, but the vast array of experiences I have had will remain with me forever and prepare me for the future to come.
