Lynsey Wales

History Major, Graduated 2007

Lynsey WalesBack in 2004 I decided to go to Lancaster for three main reasons:- 1. I live in the North West, and did not quite feel like leaving yet. 2. Lancaster has one of the best History Departments in the country, so I did not need to travel far to get myself a first class education in History. 3. I had always loved History more than any other subject when I was at school, but I also enjoyed Politics, Media Studies and English. For someone like me, Lancaster offered the perfect compromise, as first-year students can study three different courses in their first year.

I have fond memories of working at the Student Union nightclub, the Sugarhouse, while at Lancaster. This gave me new skills, and I made friends with the rest of my team. If you do plan on working in Lancaster, the Union will help you find a suitable student job, which will not impinge upon your studies. While not studying or at work, Lancaster offers a vibrant, but intimate nightlife for its students. It is big enough to not see the same people each night, but small enough for you to always be able to go out with your friends. I often enjoyed chilling out in Furness bar though, which conveniently had a History Department build on top of it...

While upstairs in the History Department, everyone has the opportunity to study topics from wide and varied periods of history. This system allowed me to try highlights such as: Kingship, Warfare and the State 750-1280, The Jews in Europe, The British from 1750, and the enjoyable surprise, Rural Societies in Britain and Ireland.

Since leaving Lancaster I have joined the communications Department of my local NHS Primary Care Trust. I now realise how much I have benefited from my time at Lancaster. The History Department produces graduates with the ability to think efficiently and clearly, so that they can effectively and confidently form justifiable opinions and make decisions. Far from leading to the obvious career as a History teacher, my degree has taken me into a career of communications, but has also given me a sound base of skills for management and leadership.

My only criticism of the Lancaster University History Department is that they do not offer four year courses, because if that was the case, I would still be there!
