Making Sense of Aging

This workshop explores the history of gerontology by examining its multivalent connections to problems in twentieth-century molecular, cellular, and developmental biology. As the challenges facing the aging populations of Western societies became increasingly apparent in the last century, scientists from many fields, government agencies, universities, and corporations began to turn their attention to applying the tools of cutting-edge biology and medicine to understanding and managing senescence. In time, their efforts redefined the morality of old age, the meaning of the lifespan, and the status of aging as a technoscientific construct in professional and popular imaginations.
