Thesis Working Title

Settlement patterns in Sicily and Calabria in the pre-Norman and Norman periods

Research Interests

My research focuses on the chronological period coveringthe transition to Norman rule in the southern Italian region of Calabria and the island of Sicily, from c.1000 to c.1150. I am currently investigating changes and continuities to settlements in these regions and their relationship to this political change. The source materials which I am utilising for this research include Latin narratives, Arabic geographical texts, Latin and Greek charter materials and toponimy.

My historical interests include the medieval Mediterranean, with special focus on the geographical regions of theItalian peninsula, the Maghreb and Sicily.

My Phd is attached to the "Norman Edge: Identity and State-Formation on the Frontiers of Europe" major project, funded by the AHRC, which is due to run until December, 2011.
