Postgraduate History at Lancaster
History at Lancaster is a large department offering a wide range of research expertise both chronologically and geographically. We have a strong research community, in which the enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity of our postgraduate students play a vital role. The postgraduates run their own regular seminar series, organize a nationally–recognized annual postgraduate conference, Histfest, and participate in staff research symposia.
Postgraduate Schemes
We offer two kinds of postgraduate scheme:
- MA in History with two available pathways — long or short dissertation
- Research Degrees (MPhil or PhD)
Both MA and research degrees offer the opportunity to work closely with one or two supervisors on your chosen research. To support that research you will also have a range of taught courses available both within History and in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Postgraduate Workshop
On 11 November 2010, Professor Quentin Skinner held a postgraduate workshop on the Lorenzetti frescoes of Good and Bad Government in Siena as part of the Department's 'Histories of Liberty' research symposium.
