Why Study History at Lancaster?
Our MA in History fosters the research interests of our students. Students take a set of taught MA module options in the Michaelmas, Lent and Summer terms which support the development of either a short (15,000 words) or long (25,000) dissertation. History for Life is taken by all students and runs across Michaelmas and Lent terms. The module demonstrates the value of historical skills for careers outside the university sector and encourages our MA students to consider creative ways through which historical research can be presented beyond the academy and how historical problems can be used to inform a host of contemporary cultural, social and political debates. We run a tailor-made Research and Professional Skills course for PhD students, covering topics ranging from publishing an article to scoping archives. We have been able to provide significant financial support for research and conference-related postgraduate travel. We offer a number of studentships and fee-waivers at MA and PhD level from a range of internal sources. We have been very successful in obtaining support for History PhD students in University and Faculty competitions. We employ our PhD students wherever possible as Graduate Teaching Assistants, providing invaluable professional experience as well as additional income. |
