Research Interests

My interests fall into two main categories: the history of Early Modern France, and the Origins of the European State. My major publications in the first area include The Parlement of Paris (1968, revised 2'nd ed.,1998); Government and Society in France, 1461-1661 (1969, 2'nd impression, 1972); Philippe, Duke of Orléans: Regent of France, 1715-23 (1979); and The Bourbons: the History of a Dynasty (2007, paperback 2008); and in the second area, The Origins of the Modern European State, 1450-1725 (1974, Italian translation, 1976); and Liberty and Order in Early Modern Europe: the Subject and the State, 1650-1800 (1986).
