Research InterestsI have published a number of papers on the cultural history of modern France and the French overseas empire (see below). More recently, my work explores the theory and the writing of history as they relate to the colonial and postcolonial worlds. I am currently writing a book on the European settlers in Algeria in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I studied and taught at the universities of Warwick (1997-2002) and Manchester (2002-2007) before joining Lancaster in September 2007. I serve on the steering committee of the Society for the Study of French History and am a core member and research events co-ordinator for the Dynamics of Memories research group (recently awarded a major AHRC Networking Grant). In January 2011 I convened (with Dr Laura Sandy, Keele University) The Organiser and the Victim, a colloquium on 'poor whites' and power relationships in the colonial world.
