Research Areas

With 9 new appointments since 2008, the Department’s range of research is broad. We cover:

• a broad chronological span, from the early medieval period to modernity
• exceptionally broad geographical scopes, including Western and Central Europe, North Africa, The Middle East, South and East Asia, Australasia, and the Americas
• methodological diversity, from political history to the study of medieval cookery, and from quantitative methods to the history of architecture and music

Our core strengths are in the following research areas:

• Medieval History - Alexander Grant, Paul Hayward, Andrew Jotischky, Alex Metcalfe, Keith Stringer.
• Early modern British / Atlantic history and Oceania c. 1500-1800 - Sarah Barber, Mercedes Camino, Stephen Pumfrey, Naomi Tadmor.
• Local, regional and geographical history, with particular reference to the North West - Ian Gregory, Keith Stringer, Angus Winchester.
