William Gilbert Website to go liveDate: 18 November 2011 William Gilbert (1544-1603) was the foremost scientist of the Elizabethan era. He pioneered experimental science, discovered that the earth was magnetic, was on the first supporters of Copernicus and, in his spare time, was a Royal Physician. From 30th November 2011 (the anniversary of his death), Lancaster University will host a website dedicated to him and research related to him, as have other early English scientists such as Isaac Newton and Robert Boyle.
