History PhD student wins national award

James Bowen (History, PhD) has been awarded the Tawney Fellowship for 2012-13, administered by the Economic History Society and the Institute of Historical Research.
His principal research interests include the rural agrarian history of the British Isles, landscape studies and local and regional history, ranging chronologically from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. His doctoral research emphasises the historic importance of access to common land for agrarian societies and engages with debates concerning the understanding of early modern poverty and welfare, the use of common land and its resources by cottagers and the rural poor. His postdoctoral research will broaden the geographical scope of his work, providing a new regional perspective concerning common land and common rights.
James Bowen is supervised by Professor Angus Winchester.
